[ NKOTBSB ] NKOTBSB interview: ‘One Direction need good songs for success’

With boybands fully re-instated in the pop charts, it’s never been a better time to take a trip down memory lane and remind yourself where it all began.

Following their highly successful North American tour last year, pop group pioneers New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys will offer UK fans the chance to catch their classic back catalogue of nostalgic ’80s and ’90s pop anthems.

Digital Spy caught up with NKOTB’s Joey McIntyre and BSB’s Howie Dorough to chat about the new generation of boybands, plans for future albums and whether they’d be up for a guest spot in Glee.

Congratulations on the success of the North American tour last year – how have you found the merge?
Joey: “It’s been great, we’ve hit it off pretty much from the get go and we get along great and that makes it all worthwhile. But then on the professional side we just wanted to make a great show and the two groups feed off of each other. It comes from a pure entertainment perspective. It’s fun to rock and to listen to music, but it’s much more interactive.”

[ NKOTBSB ] ‘Their American success won’t last’ say US boy bands Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block

While One Direction and The Wanted take the States by storm hitting the top of the American charts boy band pros, Backstreet Boys’ Howie Dorough and New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre don’t reckon our British boys are going to last long across the pond.

Joey said: “The odds are against both One Direction and The Wanted — neither of them are going to work in America – it hasn’t happened in 50 years so why now?” (We hope he’s proved wrong!)

Howard, whose group is gearing up for a joint tour with NKOTB, was a little softer with his opinions and believes luck plays the largest part in an act’s success.

He told us: “I’m not one to tell anyone what to do how to make their career happen, the hardest places to crack are the UK and USA.

“And for success to happen a lot of things need to go right. It was a lot of right time right place for Backstreet Boys.

[ NKOTBSB ] Favorite Contemporary Boy Band – Reader’s Poll

Boy bands are making a comeback! British groups like One Direction and the Wanted are conquering the airwaves and hearts of teenage girls all over the U.K., and now the U.S.

With all of the hype surrounding One Direction, the Wanted, Nickelodeon stars Big Time Rush and the impending Jonas Brothers reunion, PopCrush wanted all of the readers to weigh in on their favorite contemporary boy band.

One Direction and the Wanted are really breaking out in the States (they’ve already got millions of girls screaming for them over in the U.K.), with their singles ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘Glad You Came,’ respectively, achieving Billboard chart success and tons of airplay. Meanwhile, Big Time Rush are dominating with movies, tours and catchy tunes, while N.J. natives the Jonas Brothers are plotting their comeback with a new album in 2012.

While Hanson and Backstreet Boys were at the peak of their success back in the early 2000′s, they are still going strong. Hanson continues to crank out catchy songs like ‘Thinkin’ Bout Somethin’,’ while Backstreet Boys joined forces with ’90s boy band New Kids on the Block to form the touring super group NKOTBSB. C’mon, who doesn’t want to hear ‘Hangin’ Tough’ and ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’ all in one sitting?
